The Evolution of Barcode Systems

Date:10/10/2011

Barcode is an optical representation of data, which is machine-readable. It shows data regarding the object to which it is attached to. History Of Barcodes: The Barcode Systems originated in 1932. Ever since, numerous changes have shaped the systems, in accordance with the market needs. In the year 1932, the concept of Barcodes was first introduced by Wallace Flint. By using punched cards, he invented an automated checkout system for a grocery store. With this system, Inventory records were first updated. Initial Stages: Later in 1948, Bernard Silver with his friend Norman Joseph Woodland developed a method to automatically read the product information. By using ultraviolet light sensitive ink, patterns of ink were designed which used to glow under ultraviolet light. But unfortunately, the method failed because of unstable and expensive printing patterns. Following Stages: In 1967, David J. Collins developed a black and white barcode system which was only readable by a laser beam. This system was used for distribution, production, shipping, and many other applications. Later in the year, the first scanning system was installed by Radio Corporation of America (RCA). This system used unique “Bull`s Eye” barcode symbols. Today’s Barcode Systems: After undergoing various changes, the present day Barcodes evolved as the most effective tools of business productivity. Today, barcode systems mainly consist of four major components. Here’s a list: Barcode Printer: A barcode printer is used to print barcode labels. Barcode Label: Barcode labels are tags on which the barcode is printed using a barcode printer. Barcode Scanners: Barcode Scanners are the devices that are used to read barcodes. They help in reading the information accurately and reducing the rate of errors. Database: Scanning the barcode simply accesses that information in the database. The Barcode Systems have gradually improved and today they have become a necessity for many industries.
