The Different Types Of Barcode Scanners

Date:25/09/2011

Barcode scanners are the essential part of product scanning done at the POS (Point of Sale) stations at retailers. These are sued to scan barcodes that are printed on the product labels and acquire unique information mainly regarding the product code and price. The models of Barcode Scanners can vary from hand-held to table top ones that are connected via ports to other computerized devices. Barcode scanners have a code reader and a decoder that are used for the scanning of the labels. Earlier models had relatively simple mechanisms, were inexpensive but not that much accurate. The latest models on the other hand have polygonal mirrors and laser technology that gives very accurate results. The time taken in scanning is lesser and can be done from all angles. For these reasons, the models are being preferred by many companies across the world. But the simplest model of scanners is the Wand Scanners that look like a pen. The bar codes must be in contact with the device directly and the position should be specific so that the correct scanning can be done. The digital cameras are compatible with 1D and 2D and have a high resolution. The various kinds of barcode scanners available for various purposes include: Laser Scanner- This can scan barcodes accurately even when the barcode label is far away. Imager Scanner- This is used for capturing barcode image. The model has fixed components and a long functional life. LED Scanner- Also called CCD scanners; these use the Charge Coupled Device technology along with photo imaging sensors for capturing. PDA Scanner- A built-in barcode reader is included in this model for making scanning easier. Rugged Scanners- As the name suggests, the device has a special design for withstanding harsh conditions. Stationary scanner- This can be easily installed for faster scanning on walls or tables. Stationary scanners are mainly used in grocery stores and retail stores. Mobile barcode scanners- These are the latest models of barcode scanners. Color codes and dimensional codes are used in this model for scanning a variety of barcodes. With time, the innovations in bar-coding devices have resulted in many versions to make the scanning activity easier and hassle-free. This has streamlined the activities at retail shops and other stores with point of sale counters, thus adding to their productivity.
